The Lighthouse – Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City, was initiated as part of Glasgow’s celebrations when the city was given the Title of UK City of Architecture and Design in 1999. It was opened in July 1999, by HM Queen Elizabeth, and is the conversion of Scottish Architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh's derelict 1895 Glasgow Herald newspaper office into Scotland's first, dedicated, national centre for architecture and design.
